Challenge Fund

The Challenge Fund enhances our Annual Campaign by raising both designated and undesignated funds, primarily from major donors. This historically unique feature of Detroit’s campaign is made possible through the extraordinary generosity of one donor or family each year.

With a gift of $1 million above and beyond their annual campaign commitment, the Challenge Fund donor is named for the campaign year. Typically, the Challenge Fund donor pays their commitment over a three-year period. Of the $1 million, $750,000 is allocated as undesignated funds, counted above and beyond the annual campaign total. The remaining $250,000 can be designated according to the donor’s preferences.

In turn, other donors contribute to the Challenge Fund, often in honor of the Challenge Fund Donor. While some of these gifts are unrestricted, many are designated for specific programs or agencies.

The Challenge Fund is yet another example of how our collective giving model leverages even greater investment in the community by encouraging donors to increase their commitment with dedication to particular projects.
